About: Matthew Plewes – American born and raised in Suffolk,Va, and holds a Permanent Resident Visa (Green Card) in Japan.

After High School, certified and worked as an EMT-A, Ambulance Driver and Emergency Operator and dispatcher. (Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad – 1982-87). After a few years as a first responder decided to changed careers.

Returned to school, (Paul D. Camp Community College) and studied Management, CAD, Materials and Processes of Industry, (Manufacturing and Logistics), and Engineering Technology.
Worked in Industrial Engineering, Scheduling and Logistics, and has more than 17 years in Supervision and Management.

After leaving Emergency Medical Services, next worked for a manufacturing company of outdoor leisure furniture.
Quickly promoted to department lead, and later was supervisor of several departments all at once.

Managed fabrication department and finishing departments for the high end aluminum furniture manufacturer (Brown Jordan Co.- 1983-1989).

Oversaw customer orders, from crude materials, to fabrication, to shipment. Inventory control and stock and supply ordering were part of his daily management duty. Production scheduling, personnel handling and production scheduling was also a part of the daily routine.

Oversaw material receiving and expedited customer order flows from the order, manufacture all the way to the shipping department dock.
During the slow season, was in charge of making prototypes, implementing and developing manufacturing processes for New Products from the designer’s drawings and blueprints.

While working days at the manufacturing company, Chuntian Academy of Martial Arts was opened in the evenings. (1994-1999) (www.chuntianacademy.com) Located on W.Washington St. in Suffolk, Va.
Active Police and Police training officers from the surrounding cities, as well as, military, corrections officers and security officers as students and contributors.

A smart and effective system of advanced modern real world self defense and opponent control tactics, blended with ancient martial arts was born.

The leisure furniture manufacturing company (Brown Jordan Co.) closed down during a lease dispute with the city, and moved most operations to Juarez, Mexico with offices across the border in El Paso, Texas, and a few operations to a smaller factory in Arkansas.
At this time, offered the Mexican Factory Assistant Operations Manager job, but declined. Also declined working at the Arkansas facility and opted to stay in the Hampton Roads area.

Next, working for International Paper (Union Camp/International Paper- 1990-1999) as a papermaker, crew leader and was on the fire team, safety and OSHA team and worked on special projects.
Later, Hurricane Floyd destroyed the paper mill department and position. In 1999, Took an opportunity to work for a different company, but at the same facility. This was a temporary 2 year position as a chemical control technician and  microbiological tester for (Hercules Chemical-1999-2001).

During the time at the Papermill, being also a Certified Virginia Private Investigator, worked occasionally in Loss Prevention and Private Investigations. (Waldron Corporation).

Focusing on the martial arts school, in 2001, traveled to Japan to research and later teach his martial arts-police-military hybrid system. In Asia, eventually studying and visiting in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Korea, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. After receiving a “Green Card, took up full time residence in Japan and would “Winter” in Indonesia.

The stay in Japan was originally planned for 6 months. Unexpectedly, 911 happened and the return to the USA was delayed. Work in Japan was very lucrative.

Eventually meeting a wife and having two children. Through the many years, traveled extensively in S.E. Asia.
The original 6 months became 22 years.

In Japan, founded, owned and managed a security service that was an extension of the martial arts school.
CAPS (Chuntian Academy Protection Services- 2001-2022) was operational for 20 plus years.
The Security Business in Japan was approved through the Japanese Government and known for professionalism, reliability, international officers, high skills, and officers being bilingual.

The security company provided personal security and event security coordination and security design, implementation and enforcement for several years in Japan.

In Japan, the main market for “Westerners” was teaching English. In addition to the successful martial art school (www.caijapan.com), the English school (www.libertyenglishschool.com) in Shizuoka, Japan, was opened.

The English school had 3 locations at one time and is still active online.
In the English School’s peak before Covid, we owned and operated a subsidiary “Shizuoka Tiki Bar and Grill” that was an English only Friday night club that also had private events.

A lifelong martial artist, holds an 8th Degree Blackbelt, and is a two-time hall of fame inductee (Grandmaster of the year and Ultimate Warrior) and has been featured on TV several times in Japan, including doing a promotional TV commercial for Jackie Chan.

A very successful Kung fu class at the SBS Academy in Shizuoka, Japan for more than a decade, and several private clubs for 20 years.

Through travels, TV, and martial arts, is friends with the living legend and movie star, Ron “The Black Dragon” Van Clief.

In Japan, schooling continued, certifying  in ESL English teacher (Annex Community College) Kempo, Iaido, (Sato Shorinji Dojo) Tea Ceremony (SBS Academy), Internet Technology and Network Security and International Hotel Management, International Business (Alison, Tokoha University).

During the 2008 Leman Brothers global economic collapse, many businesses took a hit globally, and in Japan this affected many extracurricular studies, especially English schools. This also affected the English schools, causing the closure of all but one branch and losing 75% of the students. Countless English Schools closed permanently.

Next, trained as a Missionary-Celebrant through the Evangelical Church of Tokyo. “Western-style” Wedding officiating was very lucrative in Japan. Over the next 12 years, officiating  more than 950 weddings and was the resident minister at a beautiful mult-million dollar chapel.

In the Summer of 2023, after a family crisis, the decision was made to return home to Suffolk with the children to start over after 22 years in Japan.

Once again returning to school and to study Security Management (Relias Academy, Alison) and Private Investigations. (Criminal Justice Services of Virginia).

Currently, has Security-Loss Prevention recertifications and with new certifications in Security management, Network Security, Supply Chain Management and Capacity Planning.

As of 7/2023, Chuntian Academy Japan’s Security-Investigation Operations have shut down. Japan’s Kung Fu school lessons are headed by Sihing K.Nakamoto, with online assistance and guidance live from Virginia, USA.

Currently working in Loss Prevention-Security in Virginia, but looking to utilize years of experience and expertise in a career in Management Supervision, Materials Process, Inventory and Logistics.

Also trained in IT and Network security and builds and maintains several customer websites on the side.

Still active in ESL teaching, martial arts teaching and website administration.

Hobbies:
Spending time with kids, Online courses, martial arts, Transcendental Meditation and Tai Chi.
Also traveling, collecting ancient coins, international currencies, historical artifacts and more.
